Saga Zone a networking site for the over 50s launched by Saga, in October 2007, has over 30,000 users has been tested along with other social networking sites by the UK consumer magazine which. It’s ranked 4th out of the 10 sites tested and gets the highest score for its ‘discussion group.’

When Saga Zone launched its trial some 13,000 people signed up to the online community which is for people aged over 50. Saga specialises in providing services for people over the age of 50, for example, Saga holidays.

Some interesting UK stats:

  • Silver surfers account for nearly 30% of total time spent on the internet (though over 50s account for 41% of the population in the UK)
  • 16% of over 65s use the internet

Mobile phone targets the 50+ generation

An interesting article on the BBC’s website looks at a mobile phone, the ‘Life Phone’ created by Emporia. The ‘Life Phone ‘has been introduced for the 50+ demographic.

Features include a built in emergency button, which when pressed will dial one of five programmed emergency contact numbers, a large screen and a loud speaker.
