Using patient stories to improve quality of care

Nursing Times has published an article which looks are using ‘patient stories’ to help identify processes of hospital care which require quality or clinical redesign.  The paper commented that patients and their families should be included in the ‘co-design’ of care.

Charles Leadbeater and social care

Charles Leadbeater writes an article in the Guardian looking at how the social care system could be turned on its head by placing individuals in control of their own ’social care purse.’

The article looks at research carried out by Professor Chris Hatton at Lancaster University, which examined 196 people who self-direct their support. Our of nearly 50% commented on improvements in their general health and wellbeing. Importantly, they also commented that by having control over their care they had more dignity.

Dementia and tagging

Proposals for tagging of people with dementia have been put forward. The Alzheimer’s Society reports that 40% of people with dementia have been ‘lost’ whilst walking outside. Using GPS technology the tag could offer offer families and carers some degree of comfort.
