An article published earlier in the year looking at user driven innovation. The article written in the New York Times comments that “It is a difficult idea for research and development departments to accept, but one of his studies found that 82 percent of new capabilities for scientific instruments like electron microscopes were developed by users.”

Smart technology and ‘baby boomers’

In four years time the first baby boomers will turn 65.

In respect of this there’s an interesting project which using ’smart technology’ will be used to care for people in a resident development in Bristol. The project is a joint initiative involving Housing 21 and the Bath Institute of Mechanical Engineering. Find out more here and here (opens as a pdf).

Saga Zone

When Saga Zone launched its trial some 13,000 people signed up to the online community which is for people aged over 50. Saga specialises in providing services for people over the age of 50, for example, Saga holidays.

Some interesting UK stats:

  • Silver surfers account for nearly 30% of total time spent on the internet (though over 50s account for 41% of the population in the UK)
  • 16% of over 65s use the internet
